Sarebbe interessante sapere se la dissociazione della coscienza dal suo patrimonio istintuale implichi  che il cervello non è messo  in grado di produrre autonomamente certi neurotrasmettitori per cui ciò indurrebbe  inconsapevolmente  l'individuo a fornire ad esso il sostituto protesico come per esempio la nicotina o se è questa azione ad indurre il cervello a non più produrre quel neurotrasmettitore.

Per cui potrebbe darsi che la dipendenza psichica indurrebbe un comportamento coatto (per esempio il tabagismo) al fine di sopperire a quella carenza del cervello causata dalla condizione dissociativa.

Ciò implicherebbe che il tipo di comportamento coatto (di solito patogenico o autodistruttivo) sarebbe indotto dal bisogno del cervello di trovare un sostituto protesico al fatto che la condizione dissociativa gli  impedisce di produrre sostanze biologiche indispensabili al suo  funzionanamento ed al funzionamento dell'individuo.
